Today, doctors take care to make the caesarean scar as discreet as possible, most often by making a horizontal incision in the pubic hair. For optimal healing, it is then necessary to take some precautions during the months following childbirth.

Scarring after a cesarean

As after any surgery, the skin incised during a cesarean section needs many months to rebuild. The scar will turn from red to pink and then turn white. After one or two years, there will normally be nothing more than a simple line that is a little clear.

What care for a caesarean scar?

A nurse or midwife will change the dressing, clean the wound and monitor the progress of healing once a day. The threads are usually removed between the 5th and 10th day.

You have to wait 3 days before you can take a shower and 3 weeks before you can take a bath.

ווי צו פאַרגיכערן היילונג?

Even if it is painful, after the first 24 hours, it is recommended to get up, always getting help, even if it is only to take a few steps. This is the best way to avoid any risk of embolism or phlebitis, but also to promote good healing.

The first year, it is essential to protect the scar from the sun: any exposure to UV too early could cause an inflammatory reaction and lead to an unsightly and permanent pigmentation. If the scar is recent and still colored, it is best to protect it under clothing or a bandage. Otherwise, hide it under SPF 50 sun protection specific to sensitive and intolerant skin.

Once the threads are removed and after getting the green light from your doctor, get into the habit of gently massaging your scar, ideally with a vitamin E-based cream. Knead the scar area, peel it off. pulling gently upwards, roll it under your fingers, bring the ends together… The more supple your skin is, the more likely your scar will be discreet.

Note that if the quality of healing is very variable from one woman to another and most often unpredictable, on the other hand we know with certainty that smoking is a well-known factor of poorer healing. One more reason not to resume or to quit smoking.

Scarring problems

For the first few months, the skin around the scar may appear to be swollen, while the scar itself is pink and flat. Don’t worry, this little bead will subside on its own.

It may also happen that the scar does not become flat and supple but on the contrary begins to thicken, becomes hard and itches. We then speak of a hypertrophic scar or, in the case where it extends to neighboring tissues, of a cheloid scar. Certain types of skin, especially dark or dark skin, are more prone to this bad type of scarring. In the case of the simply hypertrophic scar, the problem will resolve itself but it may take a few months or even a few years. In the case of a cheloid scar, only treatment will improve things (compression bandages, corticosteroid injections, surgical revision, etc.).

What to do when the pain persists?

The scar usually remains painful for the first month, then the discomfort gradually fades. But be careful, it is not normal for the pain to be accompanied by fever, strong redness and / or a discharge of pus. These signs of infection should be promptly reported and treated.

Conversely, it is quite common for the skin around the scar to be insensitive. This phenomenon is generally transient, it can sometimes take up to a year to regain all of its sensations. But it happens that a small area remains permanently insensitive, following the section of a small nerve.
